Lydia squashed her nose against the window at Susie the childminder’s house as she watched the rain fall. The raindrops formed muddy puddles in the front garden. How long, she wondered, would it take to turn the pools of water into one gigantic lake? A lake big enough to sail across…? At Brownies, Lydia had learnt all about being prepared for emergencies. Brown Owl taught the girls how to make a ‘grab bag,’ full of essential items, to ‘grab’ in case of an emergency. Lydia’s bag contained her twin brother Kit’s torch, a first aid kit, a few snacks and some warm clothes. Lydia imagined Susie’s house floating away on her imaginary lake and hoped that Susie had a ‘grab bag’ - just in case. 6
